Mary Alice Spinney, 56, of Jonesboro passed away at Tanner Medical Center on April 8, 2018 in Carrollton, Ga. due to complications of a stroke suffered in February.
A memorial service will be held at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Peachtree City, Ga. on Thursday, April 19, 2018 at 11 a.m. A gathering of family and friends will immediately follow the service in Loreto Hall.
Our beloved Mary was born in Somerville, Mass. to William and Ruth Spinney on March 4, 1962. She spent her early childhood in Lexington, Mass. before the family relocated to Georgia settling in Jonesboro in 1974. She attended high school at Jonesboro Senior High School and graduated in 1980. She went on to earn a Bachelor’s Degree in Education from Georgia State University and worked as an elementary school teacher for Clayton County Schools, retiring after 30 years of service.
Mary was a compassionate, caring person that dedicated her life to the care and education of more than 800 children. She truly understood what was important in life – people, not material things. She had an incredible sense of humor and was the consummate friend, daughter, and sister. She delighted in serving others and always considered herself last. She will be sorely missed, but has gone to be with God.
Mary is survived by her father and mother, William E. Spinney, Sr., and Ruth M. Spinney (Griffith) of St. Pete Beach, Fla.; brother William E. Spinney, Jr. of Chattanooga and brother and sister-in-law David Spinney Sr. and Denise Spinney (Charnock) of Peachtree City; nephew David Spinney, Jr. and nieces Mary Catherine Spinney, Allison Spinney, and Amy Spinney.
“Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be your slave – just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” Matthew 20:26-28
