The Heritage Community Foundation presented a 4,000 grant Oct. 11 to chairman Judy Chambers and other members of the Fayette County Education Foundation Board.
It will be used to help fund Project Lead the Way (PLTW) in eleven Fayette County elementary, middle, and high schools. Specifically, the HCF grant will be used to purchase additional PLTW modules, with a focus on areas such as computer science, engineering, and biomedical science.
The Fayette County Education Foundation is a nonprofit organization that solely supports the Fayette County Public School System. In 2000, it was established by community members, the Fayette County Public School System, and the Fayette County Chamber of Commerce to promote enhanced learning opportunities for students and staff. The Foundation funds innovative, creative programs that are typically above and beyond the normal operating budget of the school system. Additionally, the Foundation oversees the school system’s Partners in Education (PIE) program, as well as supports other academic groups within the school system by managing their donations and dispersing funds when needed. These groups include CARE (Children at Risk in Education), Fayette County Robotics Program, and Fayette County Teacher of the Year program.
PLTW is a STEM-based curriculum that allows students to engage in hands-on experiences in science, technology, engineering, and math fields to acquire knowledge and develop skills for an ever-changing society. PLTW also provides teachers with training, resources, and support to involve their students in “real-world” learning. The program helps students become better problem-solvers, think critically and creatively, communicate and collaborate with others, and persevere when something does not work right the first time.
