Fayette County 4-H members recently participated in district 4-H Forestry Field Day Competition with exceptional results.

The junior team (grades 4-8) of Owen Leonard, David Niedermeyer, and Allison Spinney placed first, and the senior team (grades 9-12) of Conner Adams, Lilly Bentley, and Jeffrey Chambers placed third in the district.

Spinney was second and David Niedermeyer was third high overall junior individual. Chambers was sixth and Conner Adams was seventh high overall senior individual.

The team was coached by 4-H Youth Development Agent April McDaniel and 4-H volunteer Jeff Mellin.

Prior to the competition, 4-H members attend weekly practices to learn to identify 44 species of trees and 25 insects and diseases, use a tree scale stick to estimate sawtimber volume, and practice pacing to estimate a distance by walking.

To learn more about this and other 4-H programs, contact the Fayette County UGA Extension Office at 770-305-5412.
