The Senoia Area Historical Society will present a program of colorful, exciting and breathtaking travel photography courtesy of Fairburn native Gordon Kilgore Sept. 8, at 7 p.m.
Gordon’s wife gave him his first camera in 1957. Since then, he has journeyed to all 50 states, 7 continents, the North Pole, and 181 countries. Seeing and experiencing so many exotic places has helped feed the desire for exploration akin to the early explorers’ curiosity of wondering what is over the next hill, the next mountain, the next ocean.
“Photography gives me an excuse to travel,” he said. “I photograph the subject that I like and photograph for myself alone. Once home, if I can assemble a slideshow to share with others, then so much the better. I find too that by taking pictures and notes, I get much more out of any trip. The editing procedure at home serves to reinforce my memory of each trip.”
The number of cameras, meters, GPS systems, and gadgets he travels with is mindboggling. He uses a system of backpacks to organize and so usually has just the right combination to get just the right shot.
You can see some of his work in advance of his program at the 6 Couch Street location in Senoia by going to www.gordonkilgore.com.
“Traveling makes me more appreciative of what I have at home and more tolerant of other cultures and religions. For me, photography is simply the captured portion of a journey that one takes home.”
These destinations have given him memories to cherish for a lifetime. It is the record of a place, combined with the sounds, smells, and mind’s eye that are the true rewards of travel photography, according to this truly remarkable artist.
The museum at 6 Couch Street in Senoia opens at 6:30 p.m. Come for refreshments and for an informal meet-and-greet. Contact Lynn Horton at [email protected] for more information.
