The potential approval of a special purpose local option sales tax (SPLOST) by the Fayette County Commission has municipalities generating list of projects if the issue is put to a vote and approved in November. Tyrone’s current list is based on a 4-year SPLOST with revenues totaling nearly $6 million.
Tyrone’s list incudes a dozen project items and totals $5.965 million based on a 4-year SPLOST. Other municipalities have produced project lists geared to a SPLOST running for five or six years.
Town Manger Kyle Hood said by producing a 4-year list he erred on the side of the fewest dollars being generated through a one-percent sales tax. Hood said the town would add to or expand the listed projects if commissioners opt to have a 5-year or 6-year SPLOST put on the ballot.
Hood said all items listed could be address with a 4-year SPLOST. Those items include:
• Percentage share of art center construction – $284,750
• Debt service reduction – $1.525 million
• Sewer connection/expansion – $1.5 million
• Town hall renovation/ADA compliance improvement – $200,000
• Handley Park fields and facilities – $325,000
• Full-depth reclamation/repaving Powers Court/ Senoia Road – $275,000
• Playgrounds and tennis/pickleball courts – $250,000
• Stormwater replacement culverts Dogwood Trail/Pendleton Trail – $450,000
• Mill, patch, paving Briarwood Road/Farr Road – $600,000
• Public safety vehicles – $100,000
• Sidewalks/paths – $250,000
• Contingency/project overruns (3.5 percent) – $205,250
The SPLOST issue, as well as the countywide arts center topic, are expected to be agenda topics at the July 14 meeting of the County Commission.
