A 17-year-old Riverdale man is in custody after being involved in a car chase with a stolen vehicle that began in Peachtree City and ended in Tyrone.
Peachtree City Police Department spokesman Mark Brown said the 17-year-old suspect from Riverdale is currently being treated at a local hospital and will be transported to the Fayette County Jail. Charges are pending and the investigation will continue, Brown said.
Brown said officers at approximately 12:45 p.m. on on Sept. 11 received multiple calls regarding entering autos from separate locations. The victims stated that the suspect in the entering autos was driving a black Dodge Charger.
“Almost simultaneously, the department received a stolen vehicle report from Robs BP on Hwy. 54 in Peachtree City. The stolen vehicle was reported as a Red Chevy Camaro,” Brown said.
Brown said a Peachtree City officer spotted the stolen vehicle being followed by a black Dodge Charger in the area of Ga. Highway 74 and Peachtree Parkway. The stolen vehicle fled and a pursuit ensued.
Excellent interagency cooperation led to Fayette County Sheriff’s deputies and Tyrone Police officers waiting for the vehicle in the area of Hwy. 74 and Tyrone Road, Brown said.
Brown said the suspect attempted to avoid stop-sticks placed out by sheriff’s deputies and crashed into a guardrail. The suspect fled behind the Publix grocery store on Hwy. 74 in Tyrone. Numerous Tyrone Police officers and Fayette County deputies were able to capture the suspect.
Sheriff Barry Babb said Investigator Jimmy Price did a great job of deploying the stop-sticks and, along with three other deputies, took the suspect into custody after he fled on foot and continued to evade officers in the area for approximately 10 minutes.
“Price again made contact with the suspect and took him into custody,” said Babb.
Babb noted that Tyrone officers and deputies saturated the area of Carriage Oaks Subdivision and kept the suspect out of the reach of other vehicles that could potentially be stolen and provide a getaway. That is especially true if the vehicle was unlocked with the keys in the vehicle, Babb said.
Brown said multiple entering auto reports have been reported and are currently being investigated.
