Peachtree City is following noted author Horace Greeley’s mantra of “Go West, young man” as the city’s Planning Commission moved forward by approving two concept plats for two major developments on the city’s western edge this week.
The two developments, by John Wieland and Kolter Homes, are expected to add more than 800 homes to the city’s housing stock and also provide the much-anticipated expansion of MacDuff Parkway. During this week’s Planning Commission meeting, the commission wasted little time in providing approval for John Wieland’s concept plan for Everton at Wilksmoor.
The development features 204 homes on 87 acres and the first phase of the development would feature the developer completing his portion of the MacDuff Parkway extension. The developer would also be limited to obtaining no more than 100 certificates of occupancy before his portion of the parkway is completed. The commission also stipulated that the existing multi-use path adjacent to Franklin Ridge Drive be extended to the subdivision entrance as part of the first phase of the development.
The second development, named Cresswind, draw far more comments from the Planning Commission. The parcel, near the Wieland tract, is owned by Brent Scarborough. Scarborough is in negotiatios to sell the tract to Kolter Homes, who plans to build 650 single family homes for adults over 55. One of the sticking points was Kolter’s request not to build a fire station within 1,000 feet of the subdivision. The city already owns property near the site and has its planned use as a fire station.
Resident Mary Giles said the city should not give in on the developer’s request. “I live within 1,000 feet of a fire station and it has not affected my quality of life,” she said. The developer also proposed the subdivision have a gated entrance, which ultimately was turned down by the board. The Planning Commission’s recommendations will now head to the City Council for final approval.
