A former golf course purchased by Fayette County officials for $1.42 million may end up as something other than part of the future East Fayetteville Bypass.
The county commission voted March 27 to purchase the land, in order to protect a future road path for the bypass — which would need a new stretch of road between Ga. Highway 54 to the north and County Line Road to the south.
Since then, other ideas for the golf course property have surfaced. Earlier this month at a budget meeting, County Administrator Steve Rapson noted that it could make an ideal location for a new shooting range for the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office.
It could go even bigger, potentially as a larger-scale public safety training facility with a type of track that could be used to teach the PIT maneuver to law enforcement officers, Rapson said. The PIT maneuver is slang for a special method of bumping a fleeing vehicle in an attempt to safely subdue it, thus ending the pursuit.
There is already a building on the site that could potentially be used to relocate at least some of the county’s public works department if necessary in the future, Rapson said. The county has budgeted $150,000 in this year’s budget for renovations to that building, Rapson added.
The current public works facility is located on McDonough Road (Truett Cathy Highway) just east of Fayetteville, but the widening of that highway may complicate access issues for public works vehicles, county officials have said.
