The 2013 high school football season begins this week for two local schools, although neither will be playing close to home.
The Whitewater Wildcats travel to Douglas in south Georgia for a matchup this Friday night against the Coffee Trojans of Region 1-AAAAAA.
Last year these two teams squared off in the season opener and Coffee won in a 41-3 rout, but Whitewater reeled off 12 straight wins after that, including three in the state playoffs.
The Wildcats won Region 4-AAAAA last year and reached the state semifinals before losing 28-14 to eventual state champion Gainesville.
The War Eagles of Landmark Christian take the field in Savannah Friday night against Calvary Day, also a rematch of last year’s opener.
In that game Calvary Day came from behind with 28 unanswered points for a 28-21 win. Landmark avenged that loss in the state playoffs, however, beating the Cavaliers in the first round on the way to a state semifinal appearance after finishing second in Region 5-A.
The War Eagles reached the state championship game in 2011.
All seven local GHSA teams will be in action next week.
