Investigators with the Ga. Dept. of Transportation (DOT) are investigating a scam where two Fayette County residents were threatened with arrest if they did not pay fictitious fines.

Fayette County Sheriff Barry Babb on Monday said his office had been notified of two incidents involving local residents in which they were called and informed that they would be arrested if they did not pay a fictitious fine that allegedly stemmed from either outstanding warrants or being caught on camera speeding.

“The Ga. Dept. of Transportation is investigating as the perpetrator calling holds himself to be a state DOT police officer,” said Babb. “The Fayette County Sheriff’s Office wants to remind residents that they should never give any personal information or account information to settle one of these scams.”

Babb cautioned residents that the perpetrator making the calls sounds very official and even carries on the false identity when contacted by law enforcement or the news media.

Anyone contacted by this man is asked to contact the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office at 770-461-6353 or the DOT Investigations Unit at 404-347-0620.
