Mike Muetzel, head coach for Auburn men’s lacrosse team and former McIntosh lacrosse coach, was recently honored by being named the Southeastern Lacrosse Conference (SELC) Division 1 Lacrosse Coach of the Year.  The ceremony was held at the SELC Conference Championship Tournament.  Mike is in just his second year at Auburn working to rebuild the strong lacrosse legacy at the university.  The prestigious award is determined by the voting of coaches in the league.
In his first season the Tigers finished with a record of 4-6, and improving to 9-4 in his second year at the helm.
“It was a tremendous surprise to me, and extremely emotional and humbling as there are just so many great coaches in this league,” commented Muetzel.  “Our players have worked hard and we are excited about the future here at Auburn Lacrosse. It has been a great experience, even with the long commute from Peachtree City on a daily basis. Good coaches usually have great players, and I have been very blessed to work with incredible young men, and I have a great coaches’ wife, they really deserve the credit.” The SELC is comprised of 40 college teams in the southeast, with 22 universities competing at the DI level.
This is actually the second time Coach Muetzel has been recognized by his peers, receiving the US Lacrosse Coach of the Year in Georgia in 2007, making him the only lacrosse coach in the state to receive both peer-based awards.  This after he lead the start of McIntosh boys varsity lacrosse to an exciting state championship game in just a short four years as a new program and following his years with Peachtree City Lacrosse.
Known as ‘Coach Mike’ by hundreds of players he is also the is the Director of Coaching for the Copperhead National teams, and has coached the U17 and U19 Copperhead National teams to 13 tournament championships across the country in the last four years, including the U17 National Championship team of 2010.
Muetzel has also become one of the top lacrosse coaching resources in the country.
In an effort to help new coaches keep up with the changes in lacrosse, his website, laxcoachmike.com is the largest, most visited, dedicated exclusive resource for over 3,500 member lacrosse coaches across North America in addition to his popular column at Laxpower.com and recently as a color commentator for laxxtv. He has authored five top selling eBooks on changing philosophies in coaching and lacrosse drills, produced a 90 minute DVD Coaching U15 with College Drills and has conducted a number of lacrosse coaching clinics not only in Fayette County but across the country.
