The Friends of the Fayette County Public Library is an organization devoted to assisting our county’s library in filling their needs. There are always needs beyond what the county budget allows and a $10 individual membership will go a long way.
The 501(c) 3 organization began in 1985, a year before the library moved from its original location on Lee Street, to a temporary location near the old county jail. The Fayette County Historical Society has occupied the Lee Street location since 1888.
The Friends hold several fund raisers a year and the biggest one is its book sale during the Fayette Art Show May 18.
If you will be moving soon, or just want to downsize your library, please donate books in the following categories: Children’s gently read book appealing to those from toddler to 12 years; books by best selling authors, books on history whether in the United States or across the world, and books on how to become better on any given subject. On the many tables of offerings, you will find 23 different subject matters. Just bring them in to the library. Gently read books are welcome there throughout the year. There will be another book sale in the Fall.
The funds raised will go for Baby Time, a Teen Program, general supplies such as copy paper and Blended Heritage, a special program held each February that has grown in attendance over the past decade.
One of its ongoing projects is the Books for Babies Program which is a national literacy program. The program is to acquaint parents of newborns with the important role they play in the development of their children. This program contains a kit with Baby’s First Books, a small board book, its first library card, and bookmark with tips for parents and brochures to help develop readers.
Throughout each month there are a number of classes-events available for patrons of all ages. Whether it’s classes in learning French or Spanish, or Story Time for babies and toddlers, there is always something interesting going on. On Saturdays there is Story Time for whole families to enjoy.
In the past two summers, 1,200 youngsters enjoyed the Summer Reading Program and over 8,000 families participated during the summer in its family events.
Memberships include $10 for individual, $5 for seniors 55 and above and students, $25 for family and $100 corporation or patrons. The address for Friends is P. O. Box 142307, Fayetteville 30214.
