Sherifffs increase patrols of elementary schools

The Fayette County Sheriff’s Office has increased its patrols at elementary schools today in the wake of the deadly shooting rampage in Newtown, Conn. that killed 20 elementary schoolchildren and six adults.

There have been no threats to any local schools, but the department hopes to “reassure parents, staff and ultimately our children that they are now and will be safe from harm. We want to stress that there are no known threats or potential threats directed toward any school in Fayette County,” according to a press release from Maj. Bryan Woodie.

The sheriff’s office urges citizens to immediately report any activity that is suspicious regarding a local school or any other person or location in Fayette County by either calling 911 or the county’s non-emergency help line at 770-461-4357.

Sheriff’s officials noted that each middle and high school in the county has school resource officers and that all county law enforcement agencies work together “to protect our children and their educators from harm.”
