Sandy Creek, the top ranked team in Class AAAA, hosted Carrollton, the fourth ranked team, tonight in a game to decide the region championship. It was pretty much decided in the third quarter when the Patriots got a 75 yard touchdown run from Delvin Weems, his second touchdown of the quarter, to take a 30-0 lead.
The first quarter gave fans the idea that it would be a defensive battle. The Patriots did not pick up a first down until four minutes into the second quarter. They got on the board first though, earning a safety after a snap went over the punter’s head and then later capping an 81 yard drive with a two yard touchdown run from Eric Swinney. Quarterback Cole Garvin added a touchdown in the first half, escaping a sack and rushing 10 yards for the score, to make it 16-0.
Weems had his two touchdowns in the third and the Patriot defense kept the Trojans off the board until the fourth quarter when Carrollton returned a punt for a touchdown.
The final score was 30-7 and the Patriots earned another region title, their fifth in a row.
“Our defense played great,” said Patriot head coach Chip Walker. “That’s where it all starts. It took us a while for the offense to get going, Carrollton’s a good football team, but we eventually figured some things out.”
In other games, Whitewater beat Starr’s Mill 42-0 behind three touchdowns from Kendall Conley, two from Christian Wafford and one on a pass from Jay Ashley to Trevor Morgan.
Northgate hosted McIntosh and won 34-13. The Vikings finished as the third seed in the sub-region and will play at Drew next Friday, while the Chiefs will play at Union Grove. The winners of those games will make the state playoffs.
Landmark Christian took on Holy Innocents and won 36-3. The War Eagles will meet Eagle’s Landing Christian Academy next week.
Fayette County will play at Shaw tomorrow. Our Lady of Mercy was off this week.
