Powers Festival 2012 will be held at Powers Pavilion from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Sept. 1-3.
Powers Festival has been supplying the best arts, crafts, food, fun, and entertainment for 42 years and is well known throughout the nation. The festival has been selected several times by the Southeast Tourism Society as one of “The Top Twenty Events” for the month of September.
Powers Festival was formed by well-known artist Tom Powers in 1972 on the grounds of the Powers family plantation. The festival was a huge success from its beginning and involved all the communities of Heard and Coweta counties.
In 1975 Tom Powers gave up the operation of the festival to the Newnan-Coweta Chamber of Commerce. Coweta Festivals Inc., was formed as an umbrella organization to oversee the land and currently comprises of five non-profits: Newnan- Coweta Chamber of Commerce, the Newnan-Coweta Art Association, Newnan-Coweta Jaycees, Pilot Club of Newnan, and the 4-H Boys and Girls of Coweta County. These non-profit organizations purchased the festival site a few years later when the land became available.
Now called the Powers Festival, (formerly Powers Crossroads), the event features arts and crafts vendors, demonstrations of chair caning, beekeeping, spinning, as well as a working grist mill and blacksmith shop. There is also a full schedule of entertainment, both musical and theatrical, each day and exhibits and games.
The main draw of the festival has always been the juried arts and crafts show and there are artists working in mediums such as painting, photography, fiber, folk crafts, glass, pottery, sculpture and more featured in booths that stretch all over the scenic, wooded property. While perusing art is what brings thousands of people out each year, few would argue that the delightful and delicious treats available are a great attraction too. In addition to standard festival fare like hot dogs, funnel cakes, kettle corn, turkey legs and barbecue, there are also specialty items like deep fried Oreos, chocolate dipped cheesecake, key lime pie on a stick, fried green tomatoes, donuts, fudge and more.
