A College Park man has been arrested for nearly running over a sheriff’s deputy and leading officers on a chase following the burglary of an unoccupied home on Covered Bridge Way April 26, according to the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office.
Royjeri A. McClendon, 21, of Foxlair Trail was arrested May 11 for felony counts of aggravated assault, burglary and fleeing/eluding a law enforcement officer. He also faces a misdemeanor marijuana charge for throwing marijuana out the window during the pursuit, said sheriff’s Investigator Brent Rowan.
The first reporting deputy came to the house on Covered Bridge and as he exited his car, McClendon drove right at him, forcing the deputy to back out of the way to avoid injury, Rowan said.
The investigation determined that McClendon was trying to steal copper piping and other metals from the unoccupied home, Rowan said.
McClendon was able to get away from deputies during the chase, but they were able to identify him and issue warrants for his arrest.
McClendon was picked up May 11 at the Laurens County Jail and transported to the Fayette County lockup.
