An alert 11-year-old girl is being credited with saving the lives of her two next-door neighbors after spotting a fire in their carport area just before 5:30 this morning, Peachtree City fire officials said.

The girl saw the flames at 107 Grenoble and told her mother, who confirmed the fire and called 911 while the youth’s father knocked on the door to get the neighbors out,

said Fire Marshal David Williamson. A woman in the burning house actually had been awake but was unaware of the fire, and both residents in the burning home were able to escape without injury, Williamson said.

Homes in the neighborhood are fairly close together, and Williamson estimated that had the fire gone undetected another five minutes, as many as three houses might have been lost. But firefighters were able to put a good stop on the fire, which extended into the attic. Most of the family’s personal belongings are salvageable, Williamson added.

The young girl, Williamson said, had recently gone through safety day training at Booth Middle School where firefighters teach children how to respond when they see a fire, along with other emergency situations.
