A Fayette County firefighter is expected to remain in the hospital several more days as he recovers from burns sustained while fighting a house fire east of Peachtree City Saturday morning.
A total of three firefighters were injured when a collapse occurred in the upper level of the home at 180 Platinum Ridge Point, said Lt. Donnie Davis of the Fayette County Department of Fire and Emergency Services. They were able to escape the home under their own power, but two were flown to metro hospitals with non life-threatening injuries.
Two of the injured firemen were released from hospitals over the weekend: one Saturday and the other Sunday, officials said. Their names are being withheld at the time so they can have time to recover without having to field numerous calls from friends and well-wishers, Davis said.
An investigation into the collapse will occur in the coming days to determine exactly what happened, Davis said.
The fire at 180 Platinum Ridge Point was reported shortly after 11:15 a.m. by the homeowner, and the house was evacuated while fire crews were dispatched to the scene, Davis said.
The first unit arrived within eight minutes and saw heavy smoke coming from the eaves of the home, Davis said.
The fire was located on the upper floor of the house and the county fire marshal’s office is investigating how it began, officials said.
The home was severely damaged in the blaze, which was likely aided by high winds in the area.
Fire crews from Fayetteville and Peachtree City assisted the county in fighting the fire.
