There are some weekends where there doesn’t seem to be anything going on. And then there are weekends like this – jam-packed.
Whatever your interests are, whatever your age, there is something for you this weekend.
Halloween is on Monday and both Fayetteville and Peachtree City will have events for the kids.
Fayetteville Main Street and the Pumpkin People are planning a variety of family events and opportunities for local residents on Saturday, October 29 in downtown Fayetteville.
The Pumpkin Festival and Trick or Treat on Main Street will be a fun spectacle around the square as families are encouraged to come downtown and enjoy hay rides, train rides, face painting, games and much more. These activities will be interspersed between the Market Day vendors, and kids will be able to visit the vendor booths and downtown businesses for trick-or-treating beginning at 4 p.m. Then at 5 p.m. they can compete in a costume contest with prizes awarded in different age groups. During the day, everyone is encouraged to view the hundreds of decorated pumpkins on display across the street at the Old Courthouse lawn.

Halloween isn’t just about ghosts and goblins. Allan Vigil Ford of Fayetteville presents the third annual “Not so Frightful” Storytelling and Halloween party on October 29 from 2-4 pm at The Frederick Brown Jr. Amphitheater. Kids and families are invited to attend the free storytelling event and take part in lots of fun activities including safe trick or treating, costume contest, storytelling, kids dance party and more.
Kids will stay entertained throughout the event by All Hands Productions performing the Billy Goats Gruff with their life sized puppets. The Southside Order of Storytellers will also be spinning trick or treat tales at their storytelling nooks under the top rain shelter at the amphitheater and The Fred will be set up throughout the venue with lots of fun activities, vendors and yummy food. Peachtree City School of Dance will perform “Thriller” and The Legacy Dancers will complete the days activities with a performance followed by an interactive dance party for all of the kids to enjoy.
Once again this year the party is even bigger and better as “The Fred” joins together with two other events happening that day at the Shakerag complex. The Line Creek Civitan’s Great Chili Challenge beginning at 11 a.m. and “Howl-O-Ween” a fun event for dogs and their owners from 1-4 p.m. at the Dog Park presented by the Peachtree City Dog Park Association. Howl-O-Ween is the only fundraising event for the Peachtree City Dog Park which is completely user funded. Admission is $2 for park member families and $4 for non-park member families. Dog owners and spectators are also encouraged to dress up. You do not have to own a dog to come to this outrageous event.
The Fayette County Democratic Committee (FCDC) will host a Chili Cook-Off Fundraiser and Rally from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday at the American Legion Post 105, 180 S. Glynn Street, Fayetteville, Georgia. Tickets are $5 per person. Prizes will be awarded for the “Best” chilis.
If chili isn’t your thing, how about pancakes? Christian City is hosting their annual pancake breakfast on Saturday, from 8-10 a.m. in the parking lot behind the Welcome Center of Christian City located at 7345 Red Oak Road in Union City. Tickets are only $5 and includes a delicious breakfast of pancakes, sausage, coffee, and juice all of which are served to you by the dedicated house parents and employees of The Children’s Village. Tickets can be purchased in advance by calling The Children’s Village at 770-964-3309 or on Saturday at the door.
The Newnan-Coweta Historical Society is celebrating Halloween with ghastly, ghostly tours of historic downtown. For the 13th year the “Spirit Strolls” will feature costumed guides who will lead you through the streets of Newnan with haunting stories of the old homes and the ghosts which may remain. The walking tour will take place on Friday, October 28 and depart at 8 p.m. from the Male Academy Museum, 30 Temple Avenue in Newnan. On Saturday, October 29, groups will tour the ghostly streets on a trolley and will depart from the Museum at 5 p.m., 6:30 p.m. and 8 p.m. The tickets for the walking tour on Friday are $13, $10 for children 8 and under. Tickets for the trolley tours on Saturday are $20, children over 6, $15. For reservations and tickets, call the Society at 770-251-0207.
If you are looking for another spooky idea, The Peachtree City Fire Department’s haunted house (recommended for ages 10 to adult) and House of Clues (recommended for ages 3 to 10) will take place at 110 Paschall Road, off of Hwy 74, in Peachtree City, Friday and Saturday Oct. 28 and 29. The haunted house, sponsored by the Peachtree City Fire Department, is open from 7-11 p.m. and tickets are $11 for Adults and $9 for students and if you add an additional $6 to that, you can go multiple times. The House of Clues, sponsored by the PTC Optimist Club, is open from 7-10 p.m. and admission is $4 for children. The House of Clues is based after the game Clue. The children have to go through the rooms to find clues of the crime and figure out who did it with what weapon and in what room. Was it Prof. Plum in the Ballroom with the book? Who knows? If you’d rather do something more low key and shopping oriented, starting at the Fayetteville Gazebo at 10 a.m., residents can shop at an extended Market Day that runs until 6 p.m. With over 106 vendors, this will be the largest Market Day so far for 2011. The Fayette County High School Select Chorus will sponsor a used book sale at the Market Day and Trick or Treat Main Street event.
Joyce Waits, Main Street Coordinator, says that this year’s Market Days have been the best so far since starting this monthly event in 2008.
“Many people this year have enjoyed shopping at Market Day where vendors have sold their homemade and homegrown products in record numbers,” she added.
The final Market Day is scheduled for November 19, as most of the produce vendors have reached the end of the growing season.
Aberdeen Village in Peachtree City will also host their Farmer’s Market, which features vendors and live entertainment, Saturday.
If you’re looking for something really active, Peeples Elementary will host their annual Pumpkin Fun Run Saturday morning.
The Wellness Center of Piedmont Newnan Hospital will host its fourth annual Autumn Chase on Saturday, October 29, at Carl Miller Park in Newnan, Ga. A fifteen kilometer and five kilometer race both begin at 8 a.m. and a one-mile fun run starts at 9:30 a.m. Participants can also enjoy activities for the entire family, including face painting, food, Kids Castle and more. The Autumn Chase supports the Wellness Center’s senior citizen and community programming, as well as facility enhancements.
Registration is $25 for adults and $8 for kids 12 and under. Participants may register online at piedmontnewnan.org. Participants can also register at the Wellness Center. Race day registration is available without a T-shirt guarantee.
If you’re interested in theater, Newnan Community Theater continues their run of “The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged),” Thursday through Sunday, while McIntosh High School presents “Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street,” Showtimes at McIntosh High School Theatre are Thursday, October 27 at 7 p.m. and Saturday, October 29 at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. Tickets are $10 at the door.
The Fayette County NAACP will host their annual Freedom Fund Banquet Saturday, Oct. 29 at 6 p.m. at the Wyndham Peachtree Hotel in Peachtree City.
This year’s banquet theme is “Standing on the Legacy of our Past, Forging an Understanding for the Future.” The Keynote Speaker will be Congressman John Lewis.
