The Fayetteville Police Department was presented with its latest international and state accreditation certifications at Thursday night’s meeting of the Fayetteville City Council.

The awards were presented by Lagrange Police Chief Louis M. Dekmar, chair of the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies. The award was received by Mayor Ken Steele and members of the department.

The Fayetteville Police Department was inspected in December 2010 by a team of assessors from CALEA. The department received their re-accreditation status in March 2011. The department also was reviewed by a state assessor in July 2011 and received its state re-certification status.

During both inspections the Fayetteville Police Department was found to be in full compliance with all the applicable standards. Nationally, only 800 of the 18,000 agencies are internationally accredited. Statewide, only 35 of approximately 700 agencies are both state certified and internationally accredited.

“Receiving both of these awards demonstrates that the men and women of the Fayetteville Police Department are committed to providing our citizens and visitors with the best possible law enforcement services,” said Fayetteville Police Chief Steve Heaton. “We have an outstanding staff at the police department and because of our staff we are able to continue to be members of an elite group of agencies both in our state and internationally.”
