Saturday marked the end of a record-breaking season for the McIntosh Chiefettes Dance Team as they captured their second consecutive state championship in both their Kick and Pom categories at the UDA Georgia Dance Championship held at McIntosh High School.
The competition posted a record turnout of 37 dance teams from across the state and nearly 500 athletes. The weather was picture-perfect and total attendance was over 1,200.
The Chiefettes have a long history of winning. In her fiveyears as coach to the Chiefettes, Carmen Yarbrough’s team has won state champion titles in all but one of them, an impressive accomplishment in any sport.
Last weekend’s championship title comes on the heels of their 7th place finish in the country in High Kick at the UDA National Dance Team Championship held in early February at Walt Disney World.
In addition to the first place finishes in High Kick and Pom, several Chiefettes earned awards in the soloist categories:
• Adrienne Scasny – 1st Place Senior soloist division & 1st Place Choreography
• Cheyney Smith – 1st Place Sophomore/Junior soloist division
• Kristen Plunkett – 1st Place – Junior Solist division.
Additionally, others placing included: Daniela Romero – 3rd Place Senior soloist division, Caitlin Burk – 6th Place Senior solist division, Vanessa Verheuval – 3rd place Sophomore/Junior soloist division, August Anderson – 5th Place Sophomore/Junior solist division and Cortland Anderson – 4rd place – Junior soloist division.
“I couldn’t be more pleased with our team’s commitment to excellence this year,” commented Yarbrough. “These wins don’t come easily. This team has been training and practicing since tryouts last April.”
