County Historian, Carolyn Cary, and Fayette Countian, Janice Taylor Gates, are compiling information to write a book on the black schools in the county.

“We have a good bit of information,” said Gates, “on the Training School from 1954 to 1968. We are in need of information before that period of time.”

They have a paper that was written probably sometime in the 1950’s, and they only have pages one and two.

The article is entitled “Education” and relates some basic information on education under the Freedman’s Bureau Act, and the four schoolhouses built by former school superintendent, (1924-1962), F. A. Sams Sr. perhaps in the 1930’s and 1940’s
.
“We are hoping that someone knows who wrote this,” said Cary, “and can put us in touch with any pages that followed one and two.”

They add that any information anyone has on the subject will be very much appreciated.

Cary can be reached at 770-461-7152 and Gates at 770-461-6601.
