The Newnan City Council is offering a $5,000 reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction in the September beating of a 90 year-old woman in her home on Pinson Street.

On September 21 the Newnan Police Department began an investigation into the assault of a 90 year old woman, said Public Information Officer Gina Snider. The woman, who lives alone, was assaulted in her home at 121 Pinson Street. She was found by friends on the morning of Sept. 21 who routinely check on her well being, Snider said.

“I appreciate the Mayor and Council for offering this reward to assist in the arrest and conviction of the person or persons involved in the assault of the elderly lady on Pinson Street. This occurred in September of 2009 and at present all of our leads have been exhausted,” said Newnan Police Chief Douglas ‘Buster’ Meadows. “I encourage anyone with what they may think to be information to contact us on the Newnan Police Department.”
All information will be followed up by an investigator, Meadows added.

The investigation last fall determined that the victim was last seen by her friends around 10 a.m. on September 20, said Snider. When they returned to check on her the following day they discovered the front door had been forcibly opened and the woman was found lying on the floor of her bedroom, Snider said, noting that the woman was incoherent and unable to tell first responders what had happened to her.

Snider said the woman had injuries to her face and was bleeding from other injuries. There was evidence that she had been beaten and assaulted with some type of sharp object, said Snider, adding that her clothes were stained with blood. The initial investigation found evidence that force had been used to enter her house.

The investigation developed several “persons of interest,” Snider said, but each of these persons were eliminated as suspects. A number of “tips” have been received from the public. These tips have been beneficial, but none have lead to a viable suspect, said Snider.

In an effort to develop additional information, the Newnan City Council is now offering a reward of $5,000 to anyone that provides information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the person(s) responsible for the assault.

Anyone with information should contact Det. Rick Mires at 770-254-2355, ext. 118 or the Newnan Police Department Tip Line at 770-254-2350.
