Emory L. McHugh III, of Fayetteville, passed away October 15, 2017.

Emory was born in Duluth, Ga. on June 12, 1954 to the late Emory and Ruby McHugh. Emory graduated from Central Gwinnett High School in 1972, where he was the star student his senior year. He graduated from the University of Georgia in 1976 with a Bachelor of Business Administration. He later received his Masters of Professional Accountancy from Georgia State University in 1986.

Emory was an avid Georgia Bulldog fan, and amongst his favorite sayings were “Go Dawgs” and “Life is Good.” He especially enjoyed watching all college football and basketball games, playing golf, white water rafting, playing with his dogs (five previous and two current), and spending time with a large network of close friends.

Emory spent most of his working career in city, county, and state governments, working for the Fayette County Board of Commissioners, Clayton County Water Authority, City of Morrow, Georgia Regional Transportation Authority, City of Smyrna, Gwinnett County Board of Commissioners, Douglas County Board of Commissioners, and the State of Georgia Department of Audits and Accounts. He was a Certified Public Accountant and Certified Internal Auditor and a longtime member of the Georgia Government Finance Officers Association.

Emory is survived by his wife of 21 years, Sherry Reavis McHugh; sisters, Ruth Flanigan and Linda Cochran; brothers, Larry McHugh and Bobby Wayne McHugh; nieces, Debbie Landress, Jody Swords, Angie McHugh, Dedra Bedingfield, Sonya Dowis, Rebekah McNair, and Sheri Hogan; and four grandnieces and nine grandnephews.

A celebration of life service will be held at a later date. The family requests donations in Emory’s name to the National Pancreas Foundation, www.pancreasfoundation.org.
