Kohl’s asks for, receives assurances from Coweta

It was a matter of Kohl’s Department Stores wanting repeated assurances that its development at Fischer Crossings in east Coweta County could go forward. The Coweta County Commission July 7 voted 4-0 to reiterate to Kohl’s that the area of Wynn’s Pond Road that is situated on the south side of the department store site would be permanently closed provided the conditions for the improvements to the large northeast portion of the Fischer Crossings development are met.

County attorney Nathan Lee told commissioners he had been contacted about the Kohl’s development agreement closing with Fischer Crossings that is expected to occur during the week of July 11, noting that Kohl’s was requesting assurances from the county that the portion of Wynn’s Pond Road that runs across their property would be abandoned.

“This is nothing new, but Kohl’s would like to hear the commission say it,” Lee said of the standing agreement between Fischer Crossings and the county that the portion of Wynn’s Pond Road that dead-ends into Fischer Road across from Sam’s Club would be abandoned if the developer complies with the conditions placed on the development. “This is the same thing that’s already been in place. We’re not giving them any relief from any zoning conditions.”

Directly related to the Kohl’s issue is the NCG Cinemas that opened in late April. NCG on April 21 was issued a temporary certificate of occupancy (CO) good for 90 days. The temporary CO that expires July 21 dealt primarily with the as yet uncompleted intersection improvement along Ga. Highway 54 and Ga. Highway 34 where Hwy. 54 turns south. The intersection must be expanded to include a main entrance to the northeast portion of the Fischer Crossings development, the area in which NCG is located.

Lee indicated his understanding that the funds needed to complete the intersection improvement would come from the Kohl’s closing.

The commission voted 4-0 to reiterate the county’s assurance to Kohl’s. Commissioner Bob Blackburn did not take part in the discussion and did not vote since he is affiliated with the Featherston Fishing Club, owner of the Wynn’s Pond area.

The Fischer Crossings agreement also includes the installation of a median cut on Hwy. 54 immediately to the east of the intersection where Wynn’s Pond Road meets Hwy. 54. Developer Scott Seymour has agreed to install the median cut and has received permission for the project from the Georgia Dept. of Transportation.

The new median cut is designed to give Wynn’s Pond Road property owners access from Hwy. 54. Additional access will come from the construction of a loop road that will run north and west of the Wynn’s Pond area and connect to Fischer Road to the north of the Fischer Crossings development.
