Free and open to the public, the Southern Crescent Storytellers will host an Open Mic storytelling night at the Fayette County Public Library at 7:30 PM. Tellers must be 18 years of age to participate, but this event is appropriate for an audience of all ages. Teller sign-up will take place at 7:00 PM. Each of us has a story, and this promises to be an entertaining night! The Southern Crescent Storytellers are a dedicated group of talented people who are committed to the arts in south Metro Atlanta, to the advancement of children’s literary accomplishments, and to helping make storytelling once again an integral part of culture and entertainment in Georgia and the Southeast. Storytellers from around the globe are expected to meet for the College-Temple Storytelling Festival, today from 4-6:30 p.m. at the McRitchie-Hollis Museum, 74 Jackson Street in Newnan.
The Newnan Coweta Historical Society is coordinating the event, billed as the first local event of its kind.
The festival’s headliner is Irish storyteller Helena Byrne. Local storytelling group leader Larisa McMichael is coordinating the event.

The Coweta Political Forum scheduled for today in Newnan will include a speech and book signing by Kris Paronto, co-author of “13 Hours: The Inside Account of What Really Happened in Benghazi.” Paronto is one of the members of the team of six American security operators who fought to repel the attackers and protect the Americans stationed at the embassy in Benghazi during the assault that took place Sept. 11, 2012. is at the Crossroads Church at 2564 Highway 154.

Senoia’s 12th annual “Cruisin’ to the Oldies” Car Show is today from 10 a.m.-5 p.m.
You don’t have to be an antique car buff to enjoy the fun planned by Senoia’s Downtown Development Authority. Your family can stroll through Senoia’s unique community of small businesses or sit down and grab a bite to eat at one of the locally owned restaurants. If you want to snack as you walk through the show, you can choose from a selection in the Food Court such as The Varsity, chicken wings, sandwiches, kettle corn, shaved ice, yogurt, hot boiled peanuts, and more. Entertainment will be provided by “The Sock Hops,” who will be singing tunes from the ‘50s and ‘60s from noon-3 p.m.Please be aware that street parking is for participating car owners. Spectator parking on side streets and the public parking lot on Johnson St. and Clark St. will be provided by Public Housing Authority at a charge of $5 donation per car. Main Street will be closed at Couch Street to Johnson Street for golf carts and handicap parking only. Cars must have proof of handicap ID. Additional street closures are to be announced. While teachers and students are back in the classroom with the new school year in full swing, work is being done to fill open positions outside of the classroom.
The Fayette County School System needs to find qualified candidates to work as bus drivers, school nutrition assistants, and after-school aides. A job fair is scheduled for today from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Goza Road Operations Center, 939 Goza Road in Fayetteville. Candidates are encouraged to apply online prior to the fair by visiting www.fcboe.org. The South Metro Rose Society’s next meeting is scheduled for Monday, Sept. 26, at 6:30 p.m. at The Heritage Bank, 440 N. Jeff Davis Drive in Fayetteville.All rose growers from novice to expert are invited to attend free of charge.
The program features Kim Toal, the Fayette County Agricultural and Natural Resources Agent, speaking on two topics that plague all rose growers – insects and diseases – and what to do about them. This will be great basic information for newer rose growers as well as an excellent refresher for more experienced ones. The East Coweta High School Marching Indians will host the Coweta County Marching Band Exhibition starting at 6 p.m. at Garland Shoemake Stadium.The annual exhibition is in its 20th year offering friends and family a first look at each of the bands competitive shows.
The exhibition at the ECHS campus will feature performances by Newnan, Northgate, Pike County, Upson-Lee, and East Coweta High Schools.
Tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for children 12 and under. All middle school band students, with a pre-distributed ticket from their band director, will be admitted free. Gates and concessions will open at 5:30 p.m.

The Fayette County government is announcing its lake cleanup event for local residents with kayaks and canoes to assist in protecting our water reservoirs. The program is called Water Guardians and the lake cleanup is today from 8:45-11 a.m.The target area is Lake Peachtree in Peachtree City. It is vitally important to keep local water reservoirs clean of pollutants. Volunteers are asked to meet at the boat ramp parking lot at 110 Battery Way in Peachtree City.
Each new volunteer who registers with [email protected] by Sept. 21 will be given a Water Guardians T-shirt at sign-in to wear during the event.
Previous participants are asked to wear their T-shirts to the event and register in order to have enough supplies on hand.
In accordance with lake rules, no one under age 14 is allowed to operate a kayak or canoe solo. All participants must have a life vest and everyone will be asked to sign a liability waiver in order to take part.
There is also a need for volunteers who can walk along the trails near the boat docks to pick up trash. Trash bags and trash grabbers are provided by Water Guardians.

The launch for “Acorns to Wheat” by author David Wm. Allman is today at 1 p.m. in the Floy Farr Room at the Peachtree City Library.
Allman translated the technical jargon in scientific journals to create a believable portrayal of life 6,000 years ago in what would become southern France. A story of fictional lives in the real world of 4,000 B.C., “Acorns to Wheat” is billed as a book “filled with the suspense and drama of a family living in an ancient world.”

This is a hands on workshop, so bring your gardening gloves and prepare to get your hand in the garden soil. Participants will have an opportunity to create their own herb garden to take home.
