Former Sandy Creek High star Calvin Johnson, seen here in 2010 at his jersery retirement ceremony, announced his retirement after nine NFL seasons with the Detroit Lions.
The 30-year-old was coming off a Pro Bowl year, his sixth overall, and would have made $16 million this year.
In 2012 he set the single-season NFL record with 1,964 receiving yards, and during the past decade he has been the dominant receiver in virtually every statistical category.
He was an All-American at Georgia Tech and helped Sandy Creek finish undefeated in the regular season as a senior in 2003.
He is pictured above with current Sandy Creek head coach Chip Walker, who was an assistant during Johnson’s tenure.
