Coweta County high schools were among those receiving state recognition recently when they were named to an honor roll of schools offering Advanced Placement classes for college credit.

The Georgia Department of Education began recognizing AP Honor Schools in 2008. The results are based on the courses offered at each school and the results of student exams, which are administered by the College Board, the agency that administers the SAT (Scholastic Aptitude Test) used as part of the college entrance requirements at many colleges and universities.

Coweta schools on the list and their distinctions on the honor roll are listed below.

Northgate High School earned the distinctions of AP Merit School and AP Humanities School.

AP Merit Schools are schools with at least 20 percent of the student population taking AP exams and at least 50 percent of all AP exams earning scores of 3 or higher. Scores of 3, 4 and 5 are the scores that will earn students college credit for having taken the class.

AP Humanities Schools are schools with students testing in all of the following AP courses: at least one ELA course, two social science courses, one fine arts course and one world language course.

Northgate, East Coweta, and Newnan high schools all received the distinction of being AP STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) Schools.

AP STEM Schools are schools with students testing in at least two AP math courses and two AP science courses (AP Calculus AB, AP Calculus BC, AP Statistics, AP Biology, AP Chemistry, AP Environmental Science, AP Physics B, AP Physics C, AP Computer Science).

All three schools were also recognized for being AP STEM Achievement schools.

AP STEM Achievement Schools are schools with students testing in at least two AP math courses and two AP science courses and at least 40 percent of the exam scores on AP math and AP science exams earning scores of 3 or higher.
