Inman Elementary 2nd grade teacher Tania Davis loves how history helps her students shape their futures.
Davis enjoys teaching all of the subjects, but history holds a special place in her heart. She appreciates that the curriculum has a heavy focus on Georgia history.
“It helps the children to connect to and relate to their own history and culture and their upbringing and traditions,” she said. “You learn even more about where you live and where you’re growing up and what impact that has had.”
She hopes by teaching them history, she helps them see they can determine their own future.
“You’re never too young to make a difference. You can speak up. You can start something new,” she said. “You have so much impact, and you don’t know it.”
Her passion hasn’t gone unnoticed. She was recently named both the 2025 Gilder Lehrman Georgia History Teacher of the Year and a finalist for the national award.
“It’s one of those things where you feel like your passion, your love, your joy, somebody sees that,” she said. “It means a lot that it resonated with someone.”
She originally went to college with plans to become a nurse but she thinks she always knew she’d eventually become a teacher.
“I just feel at home when I’m in a classroom. I feel like I’m myself,” she said. “I thrive when I’m teaching the children and interacting with them. It just feels right. I know that it’s my gift.”
She loves teaching kids in their earliest stages. She helps them learn to learn and become better humans.
“It’s the best. You see them grow by leaps and bounds. You see them grow, not just academically. It’s so much deeper than that for me,” she said. “I just want them to be the best people that they can be and feel good about themselves.”
Above all, Davis is proud to be a part of the Inman Elementary community. She loves its welcoming, family-oriented environment.
“This is the most amazing school,” she said. “All of us are working together for the same goal: Learning and loving each other and growing as humans.”
