Oak Grove Elementary learned about the creative process of making books from author and illustrator Jonathan Miller.
Miller, creator of the “The Adventures of Sammy the Wonder Dachshund” series, spoke to students in kindergarten through 3rd grade. He talked a lot about his illustrations, like how he develops them and the time he spends creating each image. He coupled this with reading one of his books, “Sammy in Space,” and gave students time to ask questions about his work.
“I hope that kids leave my presentations knowing that hard work truly does pay off and that, if they practice their writing and art now while they are young, they are only going to get better and better at it as they get older,” said Miller. “I also like to let the students know that their teachers are giving them all the building blocks they need to be successful in life.”
Visiting school libraries is extra special for Miller because they helped spark his own love of reading. He always loved picking out new books when he was a student, and he fondly remembers author visits from his school days.
“I love visiting schools and speaking to students about my books, my art, and how I became an author,” he said. “The school visits are really fun for me, and I get a chance to share my art. Teachers love it because I get to show the kids a real life implementation of the subjects they are learning in school, like the importance of editing and rewriting. I especially like doing my presentation in school libraries because it’s a good setting and it seems a little more personal, even with large groups.”
Oak Grove media specialist Kenny Blum appreciated the message that Miller shared with the students.
“All of his books have a moral to the story as part of their closing, but I like that he stressed that failing, getting a ‘no,’ at something isn’t the end. Keep trying, persevere,” said Blum. “Plus, obviously, he encourages kids to read!”
Miller had so much fun at Oak Grove that he is hoping to come back soon to speak at other local schools.
