Fayette County Republican Party official Bob Ross is keeping his eyes open for the potential support of candidates in political races in Fayette County. That potential support could include crossing party lines.
Since he holds the office of 2nd Vice Chair of the Fayette County Republican Party, Ross was asked this week if he was considering supporting Democrat Pota Coston in her run against Republican incumbent Allen McCarty for the redrawn Post 5 seat on the Fayette County Commission.
Ross said he is looking for the best qualified people to fill positions of leadership. In doing that, it is important to look at the person’s track record in or out of office and their potential for further service, Ross said.
“I said last year that I was looking to find the best citizens for public office,” said Ross. “I also look at the person’s philosophical outlook on governance in our society and I’m assessing all Fayette County citizens who have qualified for elected office.”
Ross noted that he had supported Coston in her prior run for a Town Council seat in Tyrone. He campaigned for her door to door in the fall of 2013. She failed to unseat the incumbent by fewer than a dozen votes.
Tuesday, Ross said he has not made any commitment to support either Coston or McCarty, adding that he has not spoken with either candidate.
Aside from supporting candidates for specific political races, Ross said his most important responsibility today is to the Fayette Visioning Initiative process, of which is he co-chair of the steering committee, and to keep the ongoing visioning initiative non-political.
