A pilot was hospitalized Tuesday after a small plane that took off from Peachtree City’s Atlanta Regional Airport — Falcon Field crashed in a field in Morgan County.
The Smith Pitts Special S-1 crashed near Madison around 2 p.m. September 29, according to the Federal Aviation Administration. The pilot was the only person aboard and was airlifted to Grady Memorial Hospital with head injuries, the Morgan County Sheriff’s Office told Atlanta News First and Fox 5.
Flight tracking information showed the aircraft leaving Falcon Field at about 1:17 p.m., headed for Dream Team Airport, a privately owned landing strip in the Madison area. The crash occurred less than an hour after takeoff.
The Citizen reached out to Falcon Field Airport Director Hope Macaluso, who said the pilot was a transient pilot and was not based in Peachtree City.
Macaluso also said the aircraft did not purchase fuel at Falcon Field before departing.
The crash brought down power lines and temporarily closed Dixie Highway at Shoals Court while emergency crews worked at the scene, according to the Morgan County Sheriff’s Office.
Atlanta News First reported Wednesday morning that the pilot was recovering.
The FAA is investigating the crash.
