Avis Knighton Queen, beloved by her family, died on March 9, 2014, at her home in Peachtree City, Ga.

Avis was born on December 5, 1916, to A.B. (Book) and Ruby G. Knighton, in Orange, Va.

She worked for many years in several different organizations and editorial positions in Washington, D.C., including as a writer for the Correspondence Section of The White House. She began her White House career in the Eisenhower Administration and retired during the Carter Administration. After retiring, Avis and her husband, Charlie, moved from Arlington, Va., to Beach Haven, on Long Beach Island, N.J., and in 2002, she moved to Peachtree City.

Avis was preceded in death by her husband Charlie, and daughter, Deborah Queen.

She is survived by her daughter Carole Foran (Mike) of Peachtree City; grandsons Bill Foran (Robin) of Tyrone, Ga.; Steve (Irene) Foran of Decatur, Ga.; great-grandchildren Casey and Alli Foran of Tyrone, Ga.; and Viviana and Charlie Foran of Decatur, Ga.; sister Janis Sengstack of Columbus, Ohio, and brother Roderick (Betsy) Knighton of Culpeper, Va.; nieces, nephews and many friends.

Services will not be local.
