One local team secured a state tournament berth Monday night while two others were scheduled to take to the court for region playoffs games this week, weather permitting. Games last night were postponed, and Wednesday’s games were also canceled.

The Georgia High School Association announced this week that the first round of the state tournament would be postponed until Feb. 19-20 so that region tournaments could wrap up Monday if necessary. All region playoffs are currently scheduled to end Saturday, but if games from this week are postponed due to weather the schedule would be extended.

The Starr’s Mill Lady Panthers, after a Saturday bye, came from behind Monday night for a 52-51 win over Mundy’s Mill in a Region 4-AAAAA playoff game at McIntosh. Down 34-28 at the start of the fourth quarter, the Lady Panthers outscored their opponents 24-17 in the final period for the win that secured a spot in the state tournament. Starr’s Mill will play Drew Thursday at McIntosh and return Saturday for the championship or third-place game.

The McIntosh Lady Chiefs routed Ola 51-23 Saturday at Whitewater, as Cassidy Williams went over the 1,000-point mark with her first basket of the game. McIntosh ended its season Monday on its home court with a 47-43 loss to Drew, while Whitewater fell 56-48 to Mt. Zion to close out its season.

On the boys’ side, Starr’s Mill dropped a 52-49 decision to Mt. Zion in a Saturday game at Whitewater. McIntosh was scheduled to face Union Grove last night while Whitewater had a matchup set with Forest Park, both games to be played at McIntosh. The semifinals are scheduled for Thursday and the championship Saturday, also at McIntosh.

The Sandy Creek Patriots play Shaw tonight at home in the Region 5-AAAA playoffs, with Fayette County awaiting the winner. That game is Friday at Alexander, where the championship and third-place games will be played Saturday.

The Lady Patriots were to square off against Alexander last night at Carrollton, with the winner playing Columbus Thursday. The Fayette County Lady Tigers play the winner of last night’s Carrollton-Shaw contest. Both of those games are at Columbus, with the finals Saturday at Alexander.
