This year, the Jewish holiday of Purim is from Saturday night, Feb. 23, to Sunday, Feb. 24. The community is invited to join Chabad of Peachtree City for several fun-filled festivities.

Purim is a Jewish holiday based on information in the Biblical book of Esther (Megillat Esther), and commemorates the deliverance of the Jewish people in the ancient Persian Empire from destruction in the wake of a plot by Haman, an arrogant, egotistical advisor to the king. Esther, a Jew and one of the king’s wives, told him of the plot. The king hanged Haman and the Jewish people were saved.

The word “Purim” means “lots” and refers to the lottery that Haman used to choose the date for the massacre. It is customary to hold carnival-like celebrations on Purim.

Purim at Chabad of Peachtree City will begin Saturday,Feb. 23, with the first Megillah reading at 7:15 p.m. at 219 Kelvington Way Peachtree City.

The second Megillah reading will take place at 9 a.m. Sunday morning at 219 Kelvington Way Peachtree City.

Grand Purim in the Shtetl Bash with costumes, contests, music, pickle-making, dinner, and more will take place Sunday afternoon from 3 to 5 p.m. at the PeachCity Event Facility, 313 Dividend Drive, Suite 300 Peachtree City.
