New state unemployment data released today shows that the jobless ranks have increased yet again in Fayette and Coweta counties.
This time Fayette’s month-to-month increase is nearly double that of Coweta’s.
From December 2009 to January 2010, Fayette’s unemployment ranks swelled by 451 people, compared to Coweta’s 232, according to data from the Georgia Department of Labor.
Fayette’s unemployment rate jumped from 8.5 percent in December to 9.3 percent in January while Coweta went from 10.5 percent to 10.9 percent in the same time frame.
The trend is mirrored with Georgia’s statewide figures, as the unemployment ranks increased by more than 41,000 people from December to January. That sent the state’s unemployment rate from 10.0 to 10.9 percent as the national recession continues to take its toll on jobs.
DOL also has data for Newnan and Peachtree City, both of which also saw increases in the jobless ranks from December 2009 to January 2010. Newnan’s unemployment increased by 20 people but rose from 12.3 to 12.1 percent. Peachtree City’s unemployment increased by 115 people and rose from 7.5 to 8.2 percent.
