The City of Fayetteville Public Services Division will temporarily close the City Center Park playgrounds and all of Church Street Park to accommodate major improvement projects over the next few weeks. The Church Street Park closure will begin Wednesday morning, September 30, 2026, and the City Center Park playground closures will begin Monday, October 5.

Church Street Park, located at 250 Church Street, has seen many improvements over the last few years and is now slated to receive a full-featured bathroom facility. This has been a top resident request for several years, and money was allocated from 2023 Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST) proceeds to fund it. Water, sewer, and electrical infrastructure must be installed first, and then the prebuilt bathroom facility will be installed. The project and park closure is expected to take around four to six weeks to complete, weather permitting.

Crews will install construction zone fencing around the City Center Park playgrounds beginning Monday morning, October 5, and then demolition of the junior playground will commence. A completely new junior playground will be installed along with several new features on the relatively new playground designed for older children. City Center Park is located behind Fayetteville City Hall, 210 Stonewall Avenue West. All the new playground equipment will feature matching colors and architectural features to the existing playground. This playground replacement project is also expected to take around four to six weeks to complete, weather permitting.

“We are excited to finally be installing the much-needed bathroom facilities at Church Street Park, and we still have other improvements we would like to make there in the coming year or so,” said Fayetteville Public Services Director Cajen Rhodes. “We were faced with potentially hefty repair bills for the junior playground at City Center Park, so we instead opted to replace it with something that will look better, be more accessible, and offer many more fun and interactive features. Having these play areas temporarily closed will be inconvenient to some families in the short term, but the long-term benefits will be worth the wait.”

Rhodes noted that the rest of City Center Park will remain open as usual during the playground replacement project. Other City parks, including Patriot Park on Redwine Road, Dickson Springs Park on Helen Sams Parkway, and The Ridge Nature Area at the end of Burch Road, are also open as usual for residents and guests to enjoy.

Updates on the Church Street and City Center Park improvement projects will be posted on the City’s website and social media channels. For more City parks information, visit www.Fayetteville-GA.gov/Parks.
