Fayette County, GA — Since 1983, ExOPS (Exceptional OPS) has been one of the most impactful organizations serving families with developmental disabilities and differences in the region. Often working quietly behind the scenes, ExOPS has built a reputation as a steady, trusted resource, guiding more than 30,000 families and individuals through complex and often overwhelming challenges and transitions.

A key part of that guidance has been Executive Director Janet Smola, who for 25 years helped countless families in Fayette County and beyond. Smola led the organization through the development of community partnerships, family-centered programs, and housing advocacy—while also giving individuals with disabilities and their families a voice at the city, county, and state levels.

Janet recently announced her retirement and was formally recognized by the Fayette County Commission, which issued a proclamation presented during the ExOPS Christmas Party on December 10, celebrating her leadership and dedication.

Over the years, respected institutions and local and state agencies have referred families to ExOPS, underscoring the nonprofit’s reputation for trusted, hands-on care.

One recent example involved a vulnerable adult with disabilities living in unsafe conditions. ExOPS acted quickly, coordinating services and intervention to ensure the individual received long-term care and proper support. Janet was instrumental in this effort—as she has been in so many others—always working with compassion and humility.

“It has been an honor and a privilege to serve this organization and this community for the past 25 years,” said Smola. “I have been blessed to work with so many amazing families and individuals. Together, we’ve built something truly meaningful. ExOPS is in good hands with our new Director, and I’m excited to continue serving on the board.”

Board President Scott Johnson added:

“Janet has been a key part of the ExOPS team, working in close coordination with our board and community partners. Her leadership—especially in advocating for families—has strengthened our ability to meet real needs. We’re grateful she will continue to serve as a member of the board.” To see a video honoring Janet Smola’s service, visit:  https://vimeo.com/1145662902?fl=pl&fe=sh

Brooke Wright Named Executive Director

ExOPS proudly welcomed Brooke Wright as Executive Director on January 1, 2026. Wright brings extensive experience in disability services, Medicaid waiver program management, and inclusive program development. She is a board-certified advocate and developmental disability professional who has worked across Georgia helping families access essential support and opportunities.

In addition to her professional background, Wright’s personal journey as a mother of two children with disabilities gives her deep empathy and understanding of the challenges families face daily. She brings both lived experience and professional expertise to the role.

“I’m honored to join ExOPS and build on the strong foundation created by Janet and the team,” said Wright. “My focus is on helping individuals live full, connected lives—and making sure families feel supported every step of the way.”
