Fantastic new math-based buildings popped up around Sara Harp Minter Elementary when students designed Geometry City.

Geometry City was an engaging, hands-on project designed to reinforce key concepts from our geometry unit while making learning fun and meaningful. All of the 3rd grade participated in different parts of the project with each class putting a twist on it.

For teacher Jasmine McConico’s room, there was an immersive learning experience where students applied their knowledge of polygons, parallel and perpendicular line segments, and right angles to design their own Geometry City. Their plans were complete with labeled streets, buildings, and neighborhoods shaped by their understanding of geometric principles. To take it a step further, they designed floor plans for their dream homes, calculating the area and perimeter of each room.

They also got to bring their dream homes to life with 3D puzzles. After constructing their houses, they analyzed their models, identifying lines, angles, and shape attributes in a real-world context.

“My goal was to challenge students in a way that felt exciting and rewarding—building their work stamina while deepening their understanding of geometry at a high level of rigor,” said McConico. “They had to think critically, problem solve, and apply multiple concepts at once, all while staying engaged in a hands-on project. This activity not only reinforced their math skills but also fostered creativity, perseverance, and collaboration.”
