When Everything Goes Wrong, It’s All About the Response

Crisis has a way of hitting like a massive tidal wave. It’s fast, overwhelming, and completely unforgiving. One minute, you’re handling business as usual, and the next, you’re dealing with a heavy loss, a really big mess, or something deeply personal unraveling right in front of you. In those moments, the hardest (and most important) thing to do is pause before reacting.

The First Reaction is Emotion—Let It Pass

Frustration. Panic. Maybe even a little bit of anger. When something goes wrong, emotions flare up first. That’s normal, even for the most composed. But making decisions in the heat of the moment? That’s how things really get us in the hot seat. Ever had a heated argument where you said something you immediately regretted? Or sent an email in frustration that only made things worse? That’s why stepping back matters.

Step Back, Then Step Forward

When everything feels like it’s falling apart, your instinct might be to scramble for a fix. I have found over years of trial and error that the most effective responses aren’t rushed. They’re intentional and might take some time. Especially if grief is what you’re feeling.

Take a walk. Step away from the screen. Let the initial shock settle. Look at the big picture: will this matter in a week? A month? A year? If it involves people (and it almost always does), consider how they feel, not just how you want to fix it. Clarity comes when you slow down before moving forward.

The Detour Isn’t the End

We unfortunately don’t get to have control over every storm’s outcome, but we do have control over how we steer through it. If it’s just one of those weeks where nothing seems to go right, remember: this moment isn’t permanent. Setbacks also don’t define you. Your response does.

Wishing you a successful beginning to Spring. May it bring fresh starts, steady progress, and fewer detours.
