Margar-etiquette: Loud Phone Use in Public Spaces

Question from Disturbed by Your Phone:
I was in my doctor’s waiting room when someone played videos on their phone loud enough for everyone to hear, disturbing the quiet space. Would it be rude to ask them to use headphones/earbuds? Is it the receptionist’s job to remind patrons to keep the area pleasant for others? What about people talking on speakerphone in public places like this?

Dear Disturbed,

Etiquette is about making shared spaces comfortable for everyone. In a doctor’s waiting room—a place meant to be quiet—it’s perfectly reasonable to expect people to use headphones for videos or to keep phone conversations low. Just as you wouldn’t yell in a library, loud phone usage in a waiting room is disruptive.

If you encounter someone playing videos loudly, a polite request to use earbuds is acceptable. Similarly, if someone needs to take a call, it’s best for them to either speak softly or step outside if the conversation is lengthy.

As for the receptionist, while it may not be explicitly their job, they often help maintain a pleasant environment for all. They might remind patrons of these norms if the situation becomes a recurring issue.

Remember, a little courtesy goes a long way in ensuring everyone feels comfortable.

Warm regards,
