Mary Burke Hood, a lifelong resident of Atlanta, Georgia, passed away peacefully on January 8, 2025. She was the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Benjamin Russell Burke and the granddaughter of G. Lloyd Preacher, the Atlanta architect responsible for iconic landmarks such as Atlanta City Hall, the Medical Arts Building, and the Henry Grady Hotel.
Mary attended Agnes Scott College before earning her degree from the University of Alabama, where she was a proud member of Kappa Delta sorority. She was deeply involved in her community, serving as President of the Druid Hills Garden Club and as a member of both the Junior League of Atlanta and the Piedmont Driving Club. Professionally, Mary thrived during her 29-year career with Harry Norman Realtors, where she consistently ranked as a top producer. She also contributed to the Atlanta Realtors Association as a member of the Top Producers Committee and was honored with the prestigious Captain of Industry award.
Mary found joy in vacationing at Ponte Vedra Beach and Highlands, North Carolina, celebrating holidays with her family, sharing cocktails (Jack Daniels with a splash) with friends, telling spirited jokes, cheering on the Georgia Bulldogs, and cussing the Atlanta Falcons.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Foy Lamar Hood; and her brother, Benjamin Russell Burke Jr. Mary is survived by her daughter, Mary Frances “Sister” Hood of Atlanta; her son, Dr. Dozier Russell Hood, and daughter-in-law Mary Wall Hood of Fayetteville, Georgia; and her cherished triplet grandsons, Charles Foy Hood, Russell Burke Hood, and Wainwright Richardson Hood.
A private graveside ceremony and celebration of life were held on Monday, January 13. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Young Life Capernaum Ministry (5543 Edmonson Pike #58, Nashville, TN 37211), the Auburn University EAGLES Program (Auburn University Foundation, 317 South College Street, Auburn, AL 36849), or a charity of your choice.
Mary’s sense of humor and laughter will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew her.
