Steve’s father was in the Army and the family traveled around the United States and to other countries, as well. After a short military career, Steve pursued his education at Morehead State University, where he excelled as the quarterback of the football team and proudly served as the president of Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity. Following graduation, Steve embarked on a fulfilling journey as a teacher and coach for Fayette County Schools, leaving a lasting impact on countless lives.

As part of the inaugural teaching staff at McIntosh High School, Steve’s talents shone brightly as he coached football, basketball, and golf, earning numerous Coach of the Year accolades throughout his illustrious career. With unwavering commitment, he continued to inspire and mentor students for 32 years until his well-deserved retirement from Whitewater High School in 2012.

Beyond his professional successes, Steve found solace and joy in his interests, which included fishing, camping, gardening, and playing golf. A master on the golf course, he proudly clinched victories in several Atlanta area amateur tournaments, including the esteemed Flat Creek Club Championship.

While Steve cherished his hobbies, his greatest pleasure came from spending quality time with his beloved family. He was a devoted husband to Paula, loving father to Elizabeth, a caring brother to Glynn Hale (Gloria), and a cherished uncle to Lindsay, and Ryan (Kristina), and great-niece Merritt, and great-nephew Brann.

In addition to his family, Steven is warmly remembered by friends, colleagues, and all those whose lives he touched with his wisdom, humor, and generosity. He will forever be treasured for his unwavering spirit, kindness, and dedication to making the world a better place.

  1. So sad to hear about Coach Steve’s passing. What a wonderful and encouraging man that I had the pleasure of knowing some. His daughter Elizabeth was an acquaintance of mine throughout school, I’m so sorry for her and her family’s loss. Those of us that had the lucky chance to encounter Steve were quick to find out that he was an incredible man. God bless his soul and family.
