A Fayette County man is facing aggravated assault charges following an incident on Ga. Highway 54 West in Peachtree City where he stopped in traffic, retrieved a firearm from his trunk and pointed it at the occupants of another vehicle.

John J. Trum, 34, of central Fayette County, was arrested on Sept. 15 and charged with two counts of aggravated assault, convicted felon in possession of a weapon and possession of a firearm/knife during the commission of a crime, according to Fayette County Jail records.

It was on Aug. 20 at 1:29 p.m. that officers were dispatched to the area of Hwy. 54 between Northlake Drive and Commerce Drive in reference to a man retrieving a firearm from the trunk of his vehicle and pointing the firearm at another vehicle. A victim and two witnesses were identified and provided a written statement, the police report said.

Peachtree City Police Department spokesman Chris Hyatt said westbound traffic was moving slowly on Hwy. 54 at the time of the incident, explaining that the driver behind Trum honked the horn, with Trum then exiting his vehicle, opening the trunk and producing a firearm.

Trum then pointed the gun, not at the driver behind him, but at a vehicle in the other lane driven by a 50-year-old man and his 8-year-old daughter, Hyatt said.

Trum then returned to his vehicle and continued westbound into Coweta County. Someone at the scene of the incident recorded Trum’s tag number and provided it to officers, Hyatt noted.

Officers on Sept. 15 located Trum at his residence off Tyrone Road and took him into custody.
