FES artists place in wildlife poster contest

At Fayetteville Elementary, students care about the world and creatures around them, and the young artists at their school aimed to make a difference by entering the 32nd annual “Give Wildlife a Chance Poster Contest.” Out of more than 1,000 submissions statewide, a pair of Tigers Cubs ranked among the best, with two finishing as runner-up in their divisions.

Ava Sorrow finished 2nd in the 3rd-4th grade class, and Leilani Lyles placed 2nd in the 5th grade class. Sorrow’s poster depicted Southern Fly Agaric Mushrooms, spiders, bees, butterflies, and a mole. Lyles’s design featured freshwater wetland engineers like beavers, fish, and rabbits.

Participants entered at the school level with drawings and paintings of native Georgia plants and animals in line with the 2021-22 contest theme “Nature’s Fascinating Engineers.” Entries were judged on aspects such as theme relevance, originality and the quality and impact of the artwork. First-place school-level entries proceeded to the state contest at the State Botanical Garden, part of the University of Georgia in Athens.
