Colonial Day transports Inman back in time

There were no computers or phones where the Eagles were flying. Each November, as part of their Social Studies unit on Lewis and Clark and Sacajawea, all Inman Elementary 1st grade students participate in a hands-on Colonial Day.

Students rotated through centers that included “churning” butter and sampling foods that they would have to grow in Colonial days. They used quills and ink to write notes, practiced writing colonial sight words with chalk, and played games kids their age would have played long ago.

“Our takeaway was an excitement of comparing Colonial life to our life now and discussing how people like Lewis and Clark survived the early years in America,” said 1st grade teacher Kim Baxter. “Our students were definitely thankful they didn’t have to grow their own food this Thanksgiving break!”
