Covid in Fayette schools: 6 new student cases, 3 new staff cases

Fayette County’s public schools for the week ending Oct. 30 continued to have few new cases of Covid-19 among students and staff.

The weekly report on Oct. 30 showed six new student cases and three new cases of staff with the virus, out of a bricks and mortar enrollment of 14,490 students.

As of Oct. 30, there were seven new student cases and 87 students remaining in isolation or quarantine. That compares to 181 in quarantine or isolation on Oct. 23, 225 on Oct. 16, 11 on Oct. 9, nine on Oct. 2, 18 on Sept. 25, 35 on Sept. 4 and 102 on Aug. 28.

Also on Oct. 30, there were three new staff cases and 32 staff remaining in isolation or quarantine.

The Oct. 30 report noted 14,490 students attending in-school classes. That compares to 14,292 on Oct. 23, 13,740 on Oct. 16, 13,640 on Oct. 2, 13,596 on Sept. 11, 13,614 on Sept. 4 and 13,703 students on Aug. 28.

Fayette County public schools employs 2,989 staff.

As previously noted, asked why the school system is only providing the number of total positive cases and quarantines within the school system and not by school, officials said the number of positive Covid-19 cases are so low that infected individuals could be easily identified, putting the school system in violation of HIPPA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) and FERPA (Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act) laws. Parents will be notified if there is a case at their child’s school.
