Here’s the Covid-19 pandemic report from the Georgia Department of Public Health as of 2:50 p.m., Sept. 26.

SUMMARY: Fayette today saw its highest number of new Covid-19 cases — 32 — in just under a month. The last day with such a high number was Aug. 28, when Fayette’s single-day increase record of 47 was set.

Two areas stand out: the ages of the new cases, and their ethnicity.

On both the Aug. 28 record day and today, older teens and young adults led the infection wave. A month ago, it was the 15 to 24 age group with 15 new cases. Today, that same group led all other age groups with 12 new infections.

And atypically, Hispanic-Latinos had the most new cases on both big days: 12 on Aug. 28 and a whopping 22 in today’s report. One caveat: the category of “ethnicity unknown” added 24 on Aug. 28, but none today.

Fayette added another pandemic fatality, bringing its total to 50. The latest death is the first Asian reported to have died from the coronavirus in Fayette: an Asian male, age 82, with no underlying medical conditions.

Meanwhile, as Fayette and Coweta new cases rise by double digits daily, the Georgia Department of Public Health is reporting that the statewide numbers of new cases are falling, with 1,359 new infections reported.

Statewide deaths — known statistically as a “trailing indicator” — were 40 today, for a death rate of 2.2% of all known Georgia Covid-19 cases.
