I throw shot put, hammer, weight, and discus. I know what you are thinking. No, I am not Thor, but I am a 16-year-old with a passion — a passion that I cannot fully pursue because of the lack of field event equipment at my high school.
I even started the season with hopes of pursuing a scholarship. In November at McIntosh and Whitewater high schools, the football teams received upgrades on their fields: their fields were turfed.
I have friends on the football team, and I am happy that they could receive these upgrades. However, I am not happy that in the process they destroyed all of the field event locations — discus, long jump, triple jump, pole vault, high jump.
They told us that they would replace the field events before winter. They told us that they would replace the field events before the season. They told us that they would replace the field events over winter break. Now, mid-season, Whitewater and McIntosh still have no field events, disabling a myriad of students from thriving in an extracurricular activity, me from pursuing my passion.
How much longer do we have to wait to chase our passions?
