The student council at Whitewater Middle decided this year that they wanted to show the school resource officers of Fayette County schools how much they appreciate the work they do by providing each officer a gift bag filled with goodies.

The student council sold locker organizers to students at the beginning of the school year to raise funds to purchase the bags and the items in them, which included Gatorade, tissues, hand sanitizer, peanuts, gum, and candy. The council members spent two weeks purchasing and filling the “thank you” bags for the officers.

“The resource officers in our community are so important to the wellbeing of our schools, and we wanted them to know how much we appreciate everything they do,” said Cindy Wilson, seventh-grade world geography teacher and student council advisor.

Whitewater Middle School’s resource officer, Lawrence Vazquez, offered to deliver the bags to his fellow officers during their morning assignments. He says the bags were a big morale booster.

“I want to thank Mrs. Jessica Carroll, Mrs. Cindy Wilson, the Whitewater Middle Student Council, and anyone else who helped put together the goodie bags for our officers that serve our community. The feedback was incredible, and comes at a particularly busy time for us being that the holidays are coming up and crime peaks this time of year. This was an extreme morale boost for them,” said Vazquez.

This was the first year the student council put together goodie bags for the officers. Wilson says the group will decide at a later date if they want to do the bags again in the future.
